Thomas traces Fielding's development from The London theatre — where his irreverent farces (including The Festival of the Golden Rump) helped provoke the Licensing Act of 1737, effectively ending his stage career. Into journalism and fiction, where he created Joseph Andrews, Tom Jones, and Shamela, attacking moral hypocrisy, political corruption, and social injustice while defending good sense and good nature. Thomas emphasises Fielding's fluency, wit, and instinct for audience, showing how these theatrical gifts translated into the novel's narrative energy. The biography gives significant weight to Fielding's career as Lawyer, magistrate, and metropolitan judge, writing pamphlets on crime prevention and criminal‑justice reform.
