Tilman Riemenschneider was a sculptor in southern Germany who is now considered one of the greatest of his timethe end of the 15th century through the first quarter of the 16th century. But even though he was quite successful, comm…anding a large workshop in Würzburg and even serving as the town's mayor at one point, his name dropped into obscurity soon after his death and stayed that way until he was rediscovered in the 19th century. That was probably because of all that happened in German during his lifetime, most of which he seems to have successfully negotiated and which is reflected in his art: Intellectually and artistically, the culture transitioned from the Late Gothic to the early Renaissance; the Reformation began to rumble through Germany; and the nature of how artworks were produced began to change, as guilds crumbled and the idea of individual genius began to be considered. Riemenschneider's sculpturesprimarily religious works, mostly one-half to three-quarter-size figures used for large altarpieces and elsewhere inside churches, most famously carved from linwood rather than stone, though he did create some significant works in that mediumsurvived and were always admired, but what they signified became the subject of ever more headily theoretical debate, especially in Germany itself, especially in the twentieth century. Our book is the catalog for the first international survey of his work, an exhibition that opened in the National Gallery in Washington in the autumn of 1999 before moving on to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in the new year of 2000. It seems to have garnered universal praise, and, as is usual, it bore the same name as the catalog: "Tilman Riemenschneider: Master Sculptor of the Late Middle Ages." What is less usual is that the catalog, in and of itself, was well-reviewed as well. The New York Times art critic Roberta Smith said the seven essays in the catalog are "presented with admirable lack of redundancy and refreshing discrepancies of opinion." Meanwhile, Paul Crossley, with the Courtauld Institute of Art, reviewing for the academic journal "Renaissance Studies," praised the catalog for giving a "lucid summary" of those arcane debates that went on before and giving readers, in their place, a discussion of what he calls both "making" and "meaning" both the "hows" and the "whys" of Riemenschneider's sculptures, in other words. More to the point for many people interested in exhibition catalogs, critics praise the production quality of this book. Crossley calls it "sumptuous," and goes on to say, "Handsomely printed, generously designed, it is brim-full of splendid photographs, most in colour and many specially commissioned for the book." Our copy is in As New condition, meaning it is virtually flawless. There are no marks on the interior, the cover, or on the dust jacket. The book itself is bound in black linen. The title is blind stamped on the front cover. The title and the names of the National Gallery and of the Met and of Yale, which acted as the distributor for the book (and, apparently, the publisher in Europe), are stamped in silver on the spine. The text block, of course, is firm and tight and square. There is only the tiniest bit of shelfwear on the rear top corner of the dust jacket. Photos forthcoming, or immediately on request.
