The author had previously investigated loading methods in 1946, comparing conventional loading methods with a method that added excelsior pads as protection for the melons. This book extends that research, testing the effectiveness of four additional loading methods: the Cincinnati plan, the Illinois Central plan, the Hartsville plan, and a modified pad plan. The results of these tests, conducted in the southeastern United States in 1947, showed no significant difference among the test methods in terms of physical damage or spoilage. However, the author found that shifting of the loads caused by impacts that occurred during the transit period occurred in each of the five methods of loading under study. The author concludes that an inexpensive car loading method that will greatly reduce breakage during the transit period is unlikely, unless care while in the yards as well as after being made up in trains are handled more carefully than now seems practicable.
