Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. From the medieval worldview that saw humanity as interlocked in the divine purpose of a universal community, this book traces the development of individualism in modern times. The Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Enlightenment all contributed to a shift towards seeing the individual as the center of existence. The author examines how this change in perspective led to new formulations of social ethics, moving from religious universalism to humanist individualism, laying the groundwork for the rise of democracy, liberalism, and socialism. The book places particular emphasis on the influence of German Idealism, with Fichte's concept of the organic state as a synthesis of freedom and community emerging as a unique contribution to political thought.
