This in-depth biography of famed artist Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, a remarkable talent behind some of 19th century France's most iconic works, draws from the artist's own words and those closest to him to paint a vivid, intimate portrait of the artist's life and career. An early talent, Raffet's artistic journey started in humble beginnings as a designer of wallpaper and ceramics, but his impact on the art world would far exceed modest beginnings. This book delves into the creative growth and processes that would transform him from an engraver's assistant into one of the foremost lithographers of the Romantic period, capturing the spirit and energy of his time with his distinctive military and historical scenes. Analyzed through the lens of military history and artistic achievement, this meticulously researched volume unpacks Raffet's body of work, encompassing over 4000 lithographs, 80 paintings, and countless untold historical anecdotes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
