Wilson was Chief of the Imperial General Staff, February 1918 to February 1922, and the correspondence selected for this Army Records Society volume reflects all the principal military concerns of the period. During the last nine months of the First World War, the great German spring offensive, the Allied successes in the late summer and autumn, and the final victory in November dominate the letters. Post-war problems of demobilisation and army re-building were followed by the difficulties of meeting wide-ranging military commitments throughout the world. At home, fears of domestic revolution necessitated that the army prepare for operations in aid of the civil war. Abroad military action had to be co-ordinated with the French in order to enforce the peace treaty with Germany and to support Allied policy in Eastern Europe. Further demands were made on the army by calls to repress nationalist unrest in Ireland, Egypt, India and Mesopotamia (Iraq), together with communal violence in Palestine. ***All these topics are covered in the correspondence, which in particular demonstrates Wilson's growing disillusionment with the government's Irish policy. Wilson was himself an Irishman with strong Unionist sympathies which materially contributed to his assassination by Irish nationalists just a few months after retiring with the War Office. ***With the inclusion of a substantial number of 'in' letters from a wide range of correspondents, the selection also provides a 'cross-section' of British military and strategic opinion during the years in question. Among the correspondents are leading politicians - Lloyd George, Churchill, Curzon Milner - and senior British soldiers, notably Haig, Rawlinson, Allenby, Robertson and Harrington.' [Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb]. ***First impression of the true first edition in its original dustwrapper in very nice fine bright unfaded condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
