The stylish dust jacket by Chris Blum depicts a soigné saluki dog sitting at a bar with a glass of wine filled by a mysterious mechanism. The photo of Eve Babitz on the rear cover is by Paul Ruscha, who is the unnamed man at the heart of this book. While "Tales" in the title seems to imply that they are short stories, most read as essays or opinion pieces. Regardless of whether these are factual or fi…ction, this book, Babitz's second, contains some of her best and most perceptive writing, with the long piece on "Bakersfield" standing out. Now very hard to find in the original hardcover first edition. 178 pp. Very good in a near fine dust jacket (foxing to the fore-edge and bottom edge of the textblock and to the cloth spine of the book, slight spine slant, original price of 7.95 on dj flap).
