The Andean remains not only one of the more enigmatic of the so~called lost civilizations, it is also one of the most remote. Its origins date back to 9000 B.C., and, throughout long and stormy centuries, great classical cultures flourished before finally being absorbed, physically and culturally, by the Inca Empire. In tracing the close relationships of the monuments to the societies that produced them, and the environment in which they emerged, we confront the theme of the book: that the Andean people were intent on controlling their environment, one way or another.
