The author follows Horace's transformation from humble beginnings on a small farm in rural Italy through military service and early philosophical pursuits to his literary career in Rome under the patronage of the emperor Augustus. The book sheds light on a pivotal moment in Roman history when the traditional aristocratic culture was challenged by a new society of wealth and talent. A society in which Horace, through his writings, would attain an influential voice through his uniquely witty and often controversial literary style.
