Buch Erstausgabe
hardcover. Zustand: Very Good in Dustjacket. 1st edition. Berkeley. 1971. University Of California Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket . 0520017862. Translated and with an introduction by Murray Baumgarten and Gabriel Berns. 220 pages. hardcover. keywords: Literature Translated Spain . FROM THE PUBLISHER - During the twenty-three years of his active literary life (1903-1926), Ramon Pérez de Ayala wrote poetry, literary essays, criticism, novels, and short stories. His masterpiece, the novel Belarmino and Apolonio (1921), is an established Spanish classic, here translated into English for the first time. Like Don Quixote, with which it is often compared, it is a philosophical tour de force containing Pérez de Ayala's opinions on life, the human condition, science, art, and religion - all expressed with fine irony and a Cervantesque sense of comedy. As in Don Quixote, the pleasures of Belarmino and Apolonio derive not from the plot, but from the telling. The narrator of the novel, a guest in a Spanish boardinghouse, relates the different versions he hears of a melodramatic, mock-heroic drama of a thwarted love affair between a seminary student and his childhood sweetheart. But this story is merely a preface to the more important tragi-comic tale of their parents - Belarmino, shoemaker-philosopher, and Apolonio, shoemaker-playwright. These two self-appointed redeemers, who seek to bring sense and order to the chaos of the world, both view the world as a confused marketplace in which each man hawks his particular language at his uncomprehending and unheeding fellow men. Both are obsessed with words. Belarmino attempts to renew language by creating a new one meant to express the essence of all things and all knowledge. His rival, Apolonio, who would return to the Golden Age of language, composes heroic verse dramas, which turn out to be farces, and speaks in rhymed couplets at the most inopportune moments. Beneath the humor and the fantasy of this swiftly moving narrative lies a devastating pessimism, a caricatural conception of life and the world - but also a gentle humanism. Belarmino and Apolonio exalts the joy of playing with language and the pleasures of make-believe. Such a work defies translation while at the same time demanding it. In this case, the act of translating contributes to the growth of language and thus continues the task undertaken by Apolonio, Belarmino, and Pérez de Ayala. The translators have accepted the author's invitation to join in the organic process of speaking, naming, and creating language, which is the theme of the novel. inventory #11061.
