The single work in this volume is reprinted in full for the first time since the edition of 1684. Partly becuase The History of the League has not been widely available, students have generally ignored Dryden's long translation from the French of Loyis Maimbourg. They have focused instead upon the two items which have been reprinted, Dryden's dedication to Charles II and his long postscript arguing that the religious wars in the late sixteenth century France offer pertinent lessons for England after six years of plots and crisis. Although this volume is properly concerned with Dryden, it also charts Maimbourg's literary career and clarifies his narrative by providing maps and explaining his assumptions about historical process, church and state. Contents: The History of the League. Dedication to the King. The Author's dedication to the French King. The Author's advertisement to the Reader. The Contents of the Book. Lib. I. Lib. II. Lib. III. Lib. IV. The Postscript of the translator. Commentary. Textual Notes. Appendixes - A. Glossary of technical terms, titles and offices. B. 'The Table'. An Index printed with The History of the League in 1684. Index to the Commentary.
