As a former teacher, the author was well qualified to compile this study, particularly with her experience in rural schools and the impact on education of the Great Depression. NZ was early to introduce compulsory State education, but the author begins her history with the advent of the mission schools. Other chapters deal with Maori schools, transport for pupils, Intermediate and district high schools and the Correspondence School, for students in remote localities or otherwise unable to attend formal classes. A feature of this broad and interesting study is an excellent collection of historic illustrations.
