This book explores Nicander, a Colophonian poet and grammarian from the 2nd century BC, whose work offers valuable insights into Hellenistic poetry and science. The author argues that Nicander was not simply an imitator of earlier poets but rather a significant innovator who blended traditional forms with contemporary medical knowledge. The book examines Nicander's major works, including the Theriaca and Alexipharmaca, and discusses their literary and scientific significance. It also analyzes Nicander's fragmentary writings, shedding light on his diverse interests and influences. Through a comprehensive examination of Nicander's poetry, the book provides a nuanced understanding of his contributions to Hellenistic literature and the intersection of poetry and medicine in the ancient world.
