However, the past was no longer regarded as a mirror for the present, but as the dark night at the end of which, following liberation in 1949, a new era had dawned. What happened during the course of the long night of Chinese feudal history (and even during the pre-class millennia before then) was analyzed in Marxist-Maoist terms. All other forms of historical studies were proscribed and the research agenda limited to five themes: peasant rebellions (because it was believed that peasant uprisings were the major driving force of the development of Chinas feudal society); the formation of the Han nation; the landholding systems of feudal China; capitalist sprouts in the Ming and Qing; periodization.
