There is more than one way of telling the history of Christian origins, of the early developments of Christianity, of its spread around the Mediterranean world during the first centuries of our era and the history of the internal development of the Christian group. But no matter which approach is taken, the Roman world is part of the story. For the first five or six hundred years it was the matrix of Christianity. At the very beginning the 'Roman world' stood for a small corner of the Empire of Augustus, for Judaea and Galilee, a Roman province administered by a Roman procurator and an area ruled by a native prince with allegiance to the Empire. Before long Syria, Asia Minor, and regions further afield came into the picture. At some time between AD 300 and 600 the whole Empire became the setting of Christianity. In his original exposition of this complex subject, Professor Markus describes early Christian life and thought and their varied expressions in terms of their interplay with the non~Christian world. He traces the history of Christian self~awareness in the Roman world, and shows how the Christians saw themselves as a distinct group in society. He demonstrates how Christians identified themselves with Rome ~with its structures, its values, its culture and also how they opposed themselves to or differentiated themselves from it. Emphasizing the main strands of early Christian development, Professor Markus shows how a profound transformation took place in the mode of Christian self~understanding, and discusses the growing significance of Christianity and its relationship to the secular world, which caused it to dominate Mediterranean and eventually Western society.
