For the first time the general public has an accounting of the crimes committed by the Japanese leaders whose imperialistic desires led to the invasion of China in the 1930s and to Pearl Harbor in 1941. The world today recalls only dimly some of the atrocities that occurred then ~ the Bataan Death March, for example. But who recalls Sandakan, North Borneo, where 2,000 British Commonwealth prisoners were herded off to camp and only 6 survived the march? And who was responsible for the deaths of more than 1 million slave laborers, or the reigns of terror unleashed against other millions of Asiatic people in Japanese~occupied areas? As The Other Nuremberg demonstrates, the arc of horror in Asia and the Pacific extended from Korea in the north to Australia in the south, from India in the west to the Aleutian Islands and New Guinea in the east. Thus, after the end of World War II, when the International Military Tribunal for the Far East convened in Tokyo, eleven judges representing three quarters of the world's population were faced with the awesome task of determining the guilt or innocence of those Japanese in the dock. The Tokyo trials lasted two and one half years. (The trial of Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg lasted only ten months.) In Tokyo, 419 witnesses took the stand, including the last emperor of China. The trial transcript fills some 49,000 pages and the documents tendered in evidence add another 30,000 pages to the record. It took seven months for the judges to write their judgment, which alone was 1,218 pages in length. (The judgment at Nuremberg was only 270 pages long.) The charges against the accused were chilling. Among other things, they included "murder, extermination, enslavement, deportment and other inhumane acts." The litany of atrocities that surfaced at the trial often shook the prosecution and the defense alike. The spectators, mostly Japanese men and women, were grim~faced and silent. There were moments when the courtroom, whose dimensions resembled a football field, fell completely silent as the tragedies of Nanking, or the Siam~Burma Death Railway, or the massacre at Lipa in the Philippines, or the executions at Langson in Vietnam were brought to life by survivors of the events. Today, those convicted and executed for war crimes in Tokyo have been enshrined. Current Japanese history books treat the war as if it barely existed. The Other Nuremberg shows why the trials should not be forgotten~as a warning to future generations that aggression will be brought to justice.
