Pólya organizes problem solving around a deceptively simple sequence: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and examining the result. His discussion of analogy, generalization, auxiliary problems, working backward, and other heuristic methods helped establish a vocabulary for teaching creative mathematical reasoning. This copy is the Second Edition, second Princeton paperback printing, 1973. The copyright page identifies the first Princeton paperback printing as 1971 followed by "Second Printing, 1973." Contemporary marketplace records confirm this printing sequence. Condition: Good. Original black illustrated wrappers show moderate rubbing, surface scratching, edge wear, and creasing, with wear at corners and spine extremities. Small numbered label remains near the foot of the spine. Half-title bears old numerical/catalog markings ("719 295"). These markings suggest prior institutional or organized-library use, although no definitive institutional ownership stamp is visible in the photographs provided. Binding remains intact and pages shown are generally clean with expected age toning. No extensive highlighting or marginal annotation observed in the pages photographed. Priced accordingly. Collector / Significance: Far more than a conventional mathematics textbook, How to Solve It became a foundational work in heuristics and problem-solving education and has remained continuously influential.
