They also wrote reams of verse praising their staff, they frequently corresponded with them, and they preserved the inventories and account books giving the more mundane details of what service at Erddig involved. From these vivid and human records, Merlin Waterson has drawn a picture of life in a squire's household from the early 18th-century to the present day. It contradicts many of the assertions and generalizations, made on the basis of all too few case studies, about domestic service. Illustrated throughout with black/white photographs.
