Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm, 96 pp, ills. From the blurb - "The great American showman, P T Barnum, is supposed to have said that 'there's a sucker bom every minute'. And if anyone knew the truth of this statement, it was Barnum himself, for he was responsible for some of the most extraordinary forgeries of all time. Amongst his exhibits was 'George Washington's nurse' - apparently 161 years old - and the notorious 'mermaid from Feejee'. You can meet Barnum and his fakes in this fascinating book, together with other astonishing characters who used forgery to fool the public an experts alike. Some of these, like 'King' David, the Yorkshire coiner, and the gang who were known as the Hungarian Circle, were hardened criminals who forged money for gain. Others, like the painter Han van Meegeren (whose own work failed to gain the recognition he felt it deserved) and the tragic young poet Thomas Chatterton, had more personal reasons. Perhaps thee most remarkable forgeries were those manufactured in prisoner-of-war camps from the most meagre and basic materials providing documents and passes which would enable prisoners to escape, and on which their lives depended. But the boy who wrote a play by Shakespeare, and the doctor whose mysterious secret was only discovered after his death, had even stranger reasons for deceiving the world. The most successful forgers of all, though, have been those whose identities may never be known for certain - the people who invented the Piltdown Man and the Bare-fronted Hoodwink, for instance. Lance Salway has told the amazing stories of these forgers - and many more - in an exciting and absorbing book, illustrated with contemporary prints, drawings and photographs.
