In modern navies, frigates are used to protect other warships and merchant-marine ships, especially as anti-submarine warfare combatants for amphibious expeditionary forces, underway replenishment groups, and convoys. Ship classes dubbed "frigates" have also more close…ly resembled corvettes, destroyers, cruisers, and even battleships. A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper warship. The warship class above the corvette is that of the frigate, while the class below was historically that of the sloop-of-war. In modern terms, a corvette is typically between 500 tons and 2, 000 tons although recent designs may approach 3, 000 tons, which might instead be considered a small frigate. In naval terminology, a destroyer is a fast maneuverable long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against smaller powerful short-range attackers.
