paperback. Zustand: Gut. 116 p. Good copy, slightly browned. - - D. H. Lawrence thus concludes his essay on Walt Whitman in Studies in American Literature. Seeing greater souls has been my life's passion, imagin- ing myself first in my adolescent dream life to be, or at least to encounter, a Bach, a Mozart, John Milton, Martha Graham, Fred Astaire, Michelangelo-add your own hero or heroine to the roster; the list is with- out end. And then, wish to thought to deed, it has dominated my working life as well, being drawn to artists, musicians, writers, dancers-antennae of the race if not makers of its civilization. How did I get that way? Inhibitions against sensory experience start early in life: Don't. Don't feed the animals, don't walk on the grass, don't touch the object, and surely not the person. As a helpless nonadult, a child either accedes or rebels, but grows, grows up, in spite of prohibitions: by hook or by crook. I grew up, more or less, overreacting against rules and regulations imposed by any authority, however well-meaning, however necessary the rules might have seemed to be-might, in fact, to this day seem to be. Clearly, such prohibi- tions, whether against touching the glass vase or smoking pot or reading pornographic novels or whatever, only heighten curiosity and, at their best, encourage further experimentation.
