Ashley has published over 100 nonfiction books and anthologies. He edits the long-running Mammoth Book series of short story antho…logies, each arranged around a particular theme in mystery, fantasy, or science fiction. He has a special interest in fiction magazines and has published a multi-volume History of the Science Fiction Magazine and a study of British fiction magazines, The Age of the Storytellers. Ashley won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Critical/Biographical Work for The Mammoth Encyclopedia of Modern Crime Fiction in 2003 and the Bram Stoker Award for Best Non-Fiction for The Supernatural Index in 1995. He received the Pilgrim Award for lifetime achievement in science fiction scholarship from the Science Fiction Research Association in 2002. This is the first of five projected books (published simultaneously with the second) that will each examine ten years in the development of science fiction magazines from their beginning to the present day. This volume contains a lengthy account of SF magazine publishing ventures in the decade 1926-1935, an anthology of works from the magazines of the period, a checklist of authors' works, a summary of magazine issues during these years (including numbers and frequency of issue), a glossary of magazine editors, and a guide to cover artists of the major magazines at the time. Also included is a sampling of the most memorable science fiction pulp cover illustrations from this period. Mike Ashley's The History of the Science Fiction Magazine is a definitive, multi-volume, scholarly survey tracking the genre's evolution through its periodical literature. Spanning from 1926, starting with Hugo Gernsback's Amazing Stories, through the pulp era, the golden age of Campbell, and beyond, it provides in-depth analysis, checklists, and editorial history of magazines. Originally published in several volumes, covering specific time periods, including 19261935, 19361945, and later extending through the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, this source provides detailed information on the volumes. The series features detailed histories of major and minor publications, critical analyses of editorial policies, and appendices listing magazine issues, artists, and editors. : It documents the evolution from early pulp, space opera, to the{" "} influence of John W. Campbell and the rise of modern science fiction, according to this source. Mike Ashley is a renowned expert on science fiction history and his work is considered highly accurate, detailed, and comprehensive. Originally released by New English Library in Great Britain and later in the U.S. by Henry Regnery Company. The volumes are essential for researchers, enthusiasts and collectors, tracing the development of science fiction through its most important medium, the magazines. First U.S. Edition. Presumed first printing thus.
