DESCRIPTION - This book, at one and the same time a brilliant essay in politics and a triumph of scientific scholarship, has been for two decades one of the classic works on food and population. It has been translated into twenty-four languages and continues to circulate in most of them. Shortly before his death in the fall of 1973, Dr. de Castro, aware that the rapid changes on the world scene were lessening the value of his work, undertook a complete revision, updating, and enlargement of the text. His revision included the addition of more recent data, the modification of his discussion of events and issues in the light of the history of the past quarter century, and the inclusion of a number of major new sections: on Brazil and the effect of partial industrialization, on the Cuban Revolution, the rise of the New China, science and technology in agriculture and food processing, neo-Malthusianism, etc. The result is a book with all the massive authority of the original, now rendered current with the same brilliance that went into the making of the first edition. 'The purpose of this book,' wrote Dr. de Castro, 'is to study the terrible erosion that hunger is causing in the human race and its civilization, an erosion that threatens to blot from the earth all the gigantic works of man.' But his themes are very much the opposite of those sounded by the neo-Malthusians. He does not believe that hunger is the 'natural result of overpopulation,' but is rather a man-made phenomenon. Even more, he undertakes to demonstrate that hunger, rather than being the result of overpopulation, is the cause of it, in a real and direct biological sense, pointing out that 'when diets are inadequate in proteins, nature multiplies the number of off-spring so as to guarantee the continuation of the species. Hunger is responsible for the overproduction of human beings. JosuE de Castro was a Brazilian physician and expert on nutrition. He taught at the University of Brazil and was chairman of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization. At the same time that he held the chair of human geography at Rio de Janeiro Federal University, from 1939 to 1970, he was also a member of the Brazilian parliament and a diplomat.
