Hard cover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Some edgewear to dustjacket. Reprint of the 1860 edition. Hans Busk the younger (1815 - 1882) was one of the originators of the "Volunteers". While still an undergraduate, he lobbied the Government to form rifle clubs for defense against invasion, and created a… model rifle club at Cambridge in 1837. This grew into the "Volunteers" movement, which he helped to pioneer. He served with the 1st Middlesex Rifle Volunteers and with the Royal Victoria Rifle Club, and wrote a number of practical manuals regarding rifle training. He was styled "Captain Busk". The Volunteer Force was a citizen army of part-time rifle, artillery and engineer corps, created as a popular movement throughout the British Empire in 1859. Originally highly autonomous, the units of volunteers became increasingly integrated with the British Army after the Childers Reforms in 1881, before forming part of the Territorial Force in 1908. Most of the regiments of the present Territorial Army Infantry, Artillery, Engineers and Signals units are directly descended from Volunteer Force units.

Hans Busk the younger (1815-1882)the author of 'Handbook for Hythe, was one of the main originators of the volunteer movement in England. He himself expressed his aim in the present work as follows:- "The object of the present treatise is to supply an intelligible analysis of the system pursued an the national school of musketry, in order that officers, whether of the line, the militia, or of volunteer regiments, may, before proceeding thither, prepare themselves for the studies to which they will there have to devote themselves, and also, that the much more numerous class whose avocations do not permit of their proceeding to Hythe, may be enabled to master the rudimentary laws of projectiles, and apply theory to practice" This facsimile reprint of the 1860 edition will be of importance to the nineteenth century military historian but by reason of its wealth of technical detail, it will also hold great appeal for the arms student.
