First there is a study of the general characteristics of mining villages and towns in County Durham and the question of why they are called 'communities'. This is followed by a look at the unique aspects of local politics in the area-- the County Council has been continuously controlled by the Labour Party for over fifty years. Town and village planning is examined from the point of view of the decline in mining, the creation of new towns and the controversial village categorization policy. Finally, the book discusses changes in mining employment and the question of ex-miners working in the new manufacturing industry.'.…
