Leicestershire and Rutland were two of the most exciting counties for rail enthusiasts, boasting as they did three main lines cutting through from north to south. On the west and east sides, routes led to the West Midlands and the coast respectively. As a result of the heavy passenger and goods traffic in the area, throughout the 1950s and 1960s, a variety of motive power and rolling stock from most of the pre-nationalization companies could be seen in addition to the standard designs which appeared under British Railways. Before being swallowed up by its larger neighbour, Rutland was a railway enthusiasts delight. The Midland main line ran through the south west of the county while the impressive Harringworth viaduct dominated the skyline near Seaton. On its eastern tip this diminutive county was crossed by the East Coast main line where such famous trains as The Flying Scotsman', The White Rose', The Tees-Tyne' and the 'Yorkshire Pullman' could be seen thundering past. Sadly, due to the decline in industry in the area and the drift away from railways to roads, Leicestershire and Rutland only have approximately one-tenth of the stations that they once had, which served both towns and villages alike. John Healy, by using a fine selection of previously unpublished illustrations, portrays the story of the last twenty years of steam in Leicestershire and Rutland. It will appeal to both the general reader and railway historian alike. Size: Sm 4to.
