It is also a presentation of Tibetan art, revealing works that are still mostly unknown to the public anywhere, especially in the West. The area drawn upon ranges from western Tibet to eastern Bhutan. With the aid of the text, which is in close juxtaposition to the pictures, the student is able to "read" the items as originally intended, for these religious works of art were always conceived of as "thought~provoking picture tools." Thus to the Western reader they not only open up a new sphere of ancient art, but they also convey its spiritual meaning. There are 142 illustrations in color, all of them full of symbolic meaning: painted scrolls, frescoes, book illuminations, gilded bronzes, rare miniature paintings, and sculptures in wood and stone. A complete series of paintings, unpublished hitherto, demonstrates the various schools and their different methods. whether historical portraits or the mandalas that were intended for meditation. There are frescoes, too, from the sealed temples of the protective deities, as well as narrative picture~rolls, simple guides to the holy places, and old Tibetan picture~maps. The reader is always provided with an explanatory text, so that he or she may more easily understand the spiritual content of each item. Among 372 black and white illustrations is a complete series of Tibetan icons, showing the "diamond path" of Mahayana Buddhism. Saints, gurus, and representatives of the "diamond vehicle" are given chronologically, followed by the great assembly of the most important emanations and manifestations of the primordial Buddha in their heavenly and tantric aspects, with their retinues, accompanying symbols, and protective deities. In all there are 514 reproductions of the mystic art of ancient Tibet, giving a clear survey of Buddhist culture in a region now threatened with extinction. BLANCHE CHRISTINE OLSCHAK, who was born in Vienna and obtained her doctorate in political studies at the University of Graz, subsequently settled in Switzerland in 1946, and has specialized in Far Eastern studies, especially in the early history of Central Asia and the Himalayan regions. In search of knowledge she has made journeys on horseback and on foot in Sikkim, the northeastern Punjab, Nepal, and eastern Bhutan. She is author of several other books. In Mystic Art of Ancient Tibet, she had the collaboration of Geshé Thupten Wangyal, now working in Zurich but formerly a teacher in the Tibetan University of Dräpung.
