Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Examines a "new Jewish elite," based on achievement instead of the wealth and family connections of "our crowd," the mostly German-Jewish merchant families. Told through the experiences of 254 members of this "new" elite. Author notes that she originally intended to write a book about Temple Emanu-El in New York, but became attracted to the difference between the old guard and the newer prominent members, many of whom came from a different (Eastern European) background. Also notes about how many of the families written about in Stephen Birmingham's "Our Crowd" have lost most of their connection to Judaism. 372 pages.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First edition. First printing [stated]. 372 p. Illustrations. Index An analysis of the new generation of America's Jewish elite explores their lifestyles, economics, education, attitudes, and the intellectual and sociological changes within their world. Excerpts from an obituary posted on-line: Jean Baer Fensterheim, a writer of books and magazine articles aimed especially at women, was 69 years old. A native of Chicago and a 1944 graduate of Cornell University, Ms. Baer scored her first success as an author in 1965 when Macmillan began "Follow Me! , " a travel guide for single women looking for a husband abroad. At the time, she was single and the publicity director for Seventeen magazine. The book grew from her experiences during more than a dozen trips to Europe, Latin America and other parts of the world. This was followed in 1968 by "The Single Girl Goes to Town" (Macmillan). Ms. Baer wrote "The Self-Chosen" (Arbor House, 1982), a book about what she called "the world of the Jewish elite" in the United States since World War II. Very good. Good. Cover has some wear, tears, chips, and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on fep.
