Historically and spiritually, Cassian has long been seen as the bridge between the early desert fathers and Western monasticism. Merton's immersion in Cassian-and his later journeys into the thought of Evagrius and the later Byzantine fathers-eventually led him to be among the first American Roman Catholics to connect his own monastic experience with the recovery of early eastern monastic traditions. In October of 1955, Merton was appointed master of novices at the Abbey of Gethsemani, and the lectures collected in Cassian and the Fathers represent his teachings to these novitiates as well as Merton's own deep love for and commitment to monastic tradition, which likewise coincides with his attempts ''to bring that tradition into a fruitful encounter and engagement with contemporary society and culture'' (O'Connell in the introduction). Rather than ordering his lectures academically, Merton aimed his presentation at the formation of the whole person, a mature monk. The book consists of two major sections: an historical overview of monastic spirituality from the Apostolic Fathers to Evagrius Ponticus and a series of lectures summarizing Cassian's Institutes and Conferences. Merton's overview of the tradition is at once succinct, lively, and comprehensive though his later sections tend to be less satisfying. But how could anyone (even the remarkable Merton) outdo the master Cassian? If anything, his summary leaves us hungry for more of the real thing.…
