In April 1975, Wellesley College invited 10 people to conduct symposia for Photography Within the Humanities. Includes photos and essays by John Morris, Paul Taylor, Gjon Mili, Robert Frank, Frederick Wiseman, John Szarkowski, W. Eugene Smith, Susan Sontag, Irving Penn, and Robert Coles. In addition there are other important photos included as necessary for the presenters. Coordinated by the Wellesley Art Department the work was edited by Eugenia Parry Janis & Wendy MacNeil.Parry is well regarded in the world of photography. She taught one of the first official history of photography classes at Wellesley in the early 70s, creating the curriculum from scratch. She s published over one hundred pieces during her lifetime, including essays for exhibition catalogues and periodicals and several books. In 1985, she was invited to the University of New Mexico to replace Beaumont Newhall (who wrote the book, The History of Photography, which is still in use as a textbook today) as the photo history professor. She had been at Wellesley for over ten years by that time. MacNeil arrived at Wellesley in 1973, when she was appointed Assistant Professor of Art. She taught at Wellesley from 1973 to 1985, and also worked with her colleague Eugenia Parry to co-organize the symposium Photography Within the Humanities, in 1975. She joined the faculty of the Rhode Island School of Design in 1976, where she continued teaching until 2007. She had degrees from Smith, MIT, and Harvards and worked with Minor White among others.
