Cummings: "From a Mighty Fortress: Prints, Drawings, and Books in the Age of Luther 1483-1546" is a unique exhibition of works drawn from two magnificent collections of late Gothic and early Renaissance graphic art: the Kupfe…rstichkabinett of the Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg and the Landesbibliothek Coburg in West Germany. The 216 works in the exhibition were executed by Northern European artists during one of the most crucial periods in the history of Western civilization. In these years, Germany experienced both the turmoil of the Protestant Reformation and an artistic renaissance that encompassed significant developments in printmaking. The graphic arts played a decisive role in disseminating the ideas of the Reformation, and many of the best artists of the time devoted a large measure of their creative energies to the making of prints and the illustration of books. The works in the exhibition, most of which have never before been seen outside Germany, were chosen not only for their artistic quality but also because they reflect so cogently the life of the period - its political realities, social mores, religious beliefs, and intellectual concerns. It is particularly fitting that these works should come from Coburg. In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Coburg was a thriving economic center controlled by the Dukes of Saxony. Supporters and protectors of Martin Luther, these Saxon princes played a vital role in the Reformation. In 1530, during one of the most difficult times of his life, Luther found a secure retreat in the Veste Coburg.". Very Good.
