Hardcover. Zustand: NF. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: VG+. Photos, Drawings (illustrator). 1st Thus. Jean Batten, born in NZ in 1909 became that country's first internationally known aviatrix (as women pilots were then known) at a time when there were a number of record breaking fliers of that gender. Jean Batten won her recognition in their ranks for a number of long-distance record solo fllights, made in light civilian aircraft. Soon after travelling to Englandf in the late 1920s she joined the London Flying Club and by 1932 had obtained her private and commercial pilot's licences. In a Gipsy Moth aircraft set set a new record for a solo flight England to Australia and in 1936 was the first woman to fly solo from England to NZ. This flight was made in a Percivil Gull. Between 1934 and 1937 Jean Batten made seven record setting flights, was awarded number of decorations and six international aviation trophies The outbreak of WWII ended her flying career. He book "Alone In The Sky" was a revised and enlarged version of her earlier book "My Life" published in 1938 and was released simultaneously in the UK and NZ in 1979 to co-inside with the opening of a "Pioneer Aviators Pravillion" at the Auckland Museum of Transport and Technology at which she was the Guest-of Honour." This copy of the book, while not actually signed by Jean Bannen, includes an un-used stamped coimmemorative envelope signed in ink "Jean Battenj" lower right front corner with portrait of JB at left and date line "First Day of Issue Nov 24th 1979". at top left. Enclosed is a printed card initialled JB and with the ink signature' Jean Batten' within a circular crest. The card bears the note "In Appreciation for your support of the Sir Keith Park Memorial Airfield" above the signature. (A faint mark on the reverse of this card suggests that it was initially lightly pasted in the book in the form of a presentation book plate.) First edition of 1979 in this form, jointly published in NZ and the UK by Technical Books and Airlife, 190 pages, illustrated with 21 b/w photos (centrally located) with numerous in-text drawings by L R Williams. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF, as is the text block. The DJ is VG+ with colour art aircraft to front, b/w portrait photo of author on back panel. An excellet copy of the book which is enhanced by the loosely enclosed extras. In the rare first day cover envelope is a biographical card carring a JB biography and seperately an unused colour postcard shiwing JB's Gull aircraft. Its seems likely that the book and its enclosures were purchased on the day of the ceremony JB attended at the Museum of Transport and Technology in Ausckland. Author's Signatures.
