The book, with its dark blue cloth cover with gold lettering and decoration, is marred only with one very small bump to the top front cover.? Otherwise the book is "As New."? The dust wrapper shows some wear, along the top and bottom edges, with crinkling, and two small quarter-inch tears.? The top two corners of the wrapper show wear also.? But overall, the dust jacket is in very good condition.? The reprint is a facsimile reproduction of the 1893 first edition, and is liberally sprinkled with illustrations and numerous portraits of prominent people and acquaintances.? William Downie came to California in 1849, and spend the next 50 years ?hunting for gold? up and down the Pacific Coast.? Today?s California community of Downieville is named after him.? The author gives lengthy accounts of the July 4, 1851 incident at Downieville, where the beautiful Mexican woman Juanita was convicted of murder, and sentenced to be hanged.?
