Printed wrappers, 8vo, 22 cm, 171 pp. Over 1450 entries, From the introduction - "In the three centuries from 1500 to 1800 algebra underwent a measured transformation. It developed from the outset as a problem-solving art. By the end of the 18th century algebra had become established as the fundamental language of mathematics. Works ranging from short pieces in scientific periodicals to major monographs and textbooks presented the case for and the results of algebra. This bibliography lists those publications chronologically, beginning with Pacioli's Summa de arithmetica in 1494 and concluding with textbooks, treatises, and journal articles for the year 1799. It includes textbooks and research pieces with algebraic content as well as publications devoted solely to algebra. The utility of the bibliography resides first in its identification of a large body of algebraic literature, far greater than the collection of sources on which most secondary accounts have been based. This broader coverage permits historians interested in the development of algebra a better sense of both the content and the context of algebraic research. The international character of the bibliography and its coverage of three centuries promise to be useful as well, especially in providing information for the study of scientific publication patterns and practices. The bibliography also offers striking evidence of the expansion of mathematical education, and can lead readers to conclusions regarding the changing nature of the audience for mathematical knowledge." Very Good.
