Foreward: The mountains have long held a special fascination for me whether climbing… 14,270-Grays Peak, bicycling up Deer Creek Canyon, hiking in the Canadian Rockies, riding passenger trains through the Swiss Alps or photographing D&RGW freights on Tennessee Pass. Although I was born in Fox Lake, Illinois, my parents moved to Denver when I was a young child. The Mile High City was a fortunate choice for someone who would grow up to love the mountains, as Colorado is by far the most mountainous of the lower forty-eight states. In fact, fifty-four peaks in Colorado exceed 14,000 feet in elevation. Accordingly, I soon developed a profound enthusiasm for the mountains and, eventually, for the railroads which penetrate or surmount them. Now it would be unthinkable for me to live anywhere apart from the towering and challenging peaks. Of course, Colorado does not by an means have a monopoly on real mountains, as many other western states also boast spectacular mountain scenery and railroads. In selecting the pictures for a new book, it was immediately apparent to me that the most appealing photos were those in which the mountains figured prominently, hence the title: Mountain Mainlines of the West. Obviously, the book does not pretend to cover all of the mountainous mainlines, as that would be impossible in a volume of this size. Rather, the locations featured here are personal favorites of mine throughout the vast and beautiful West. As you will soon discover, this book does not follow the conventional standard of working from east to west. Instead, the pictorial coverage runs in a large circle starting in New Mexico, going up through California, Oregon and Washington, and on into British Columbia, then dropping back down into Montana, Utah and Wyoming and ending up back home in Colorado. It is my sincere wish that you will enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed roaming the wonderful West and taking the photographs. As you peruse Mountain Mainlines, you will embark upon an armchair journey along some of the most scenic railroad lines in North America. Bon voyage.
