First published in 1918 when his wartime experiences were very fresh in his mind, The Emma Gees is a personal and detailed account of McBride's service with the Machine Gun section of his battalion. The machine guns (or MG's, hence "Emma Gees" phonetically) became the dominant weapon during World War One with the gunners both inflicting- and taking- massive casualties. The job was dangerous enough to be given the nickname of "Suicide Club" and McBride vividly tells why. With chapters like "A Fine Day for Murder" and "Snipers Barn", this book makes a fine companion to A Rifleman Went to War. "Though Captain McBride would rather fight than write, his book 'The Emma Gees' proves that he can do both things admirably". Illustrated with photographs and Trench Maps. Ref YY 5.
