He became a significant figure in late nineteenth-century French painting, successfully blending academic ideals, realistic observation, and poetic sentiment, which garnered him acclaim from critics and collectors across France, England, and America.This publication accompanies an exhibition that is the most extensive ever dedicated to Breton, organised by Hollister Sturges, Curator of European Art at the Joslyn Art Museum.
