Later, shot down over Northern France, he evaded capture and made his way home thr…ough Spain and Gibraltar with the help of the French Resistance Workers and the Allied escape organization. Again he wrote a vivid account of his exploits, but was unable to complete it because after a few months in the UK on fighter opera- tions he was sent off to the Middle East in command of a squadron. There, after only a few weeks, he was shot down and killed over El Alamein when leading his pilots in an operation on the evening of 17th July 1942. He was 22. As Marshal of the RAF, Sir John Grandy says in his Foreword: 'The story his writings tell makes excit- ing reading and is a remarkable and valuable contribution to Royal Air Force literature and to our knowledge of air fighting and its development in the early years of World War ll.'
