Hardcover / Hardback. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First edition. Hardback. SIGNED. From the creator of 'Taggart' comes a real life murder mystery. Charles Angus, a Galloway man and slave trader in Liverpool, was put on trial at Lancaster Castle in 1808 for the murder of his children's governess, Margaret Burns, who was also his wife's half-sister. The case presented so many bizarre features and mysterious elements that even today, it remains officially unsolved. A malicious town clerk, a meddling clergyman, a spiteful next-door neighbour, an ambitious mother-in-law and a hostile and vengeful medical fraternity all played their parts in what became a local sensation. It is also a story of what can happen to justice in any age when prejudice prevails and vanity blinds those who are required to serve it. Between Charles Angus and the gallows stood just one man, whose career and reputation were ultimately blighted by his involvement in the case. A sensitive reconstruction of a little-known murder mystery, in which the body of one of the supposed victims - a new born baby - was never found. Illus., Notes on Sources and Index. 206pp. 8vo. h/back. FLATSIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. F. in F. dw. signed by author.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, IN BLACK PEN, ON TITLE PAGE 'To Tim, Best wishes, Glenn Chandler (I hope you find Edward!!)'. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, small closed tear to bottom front jacket, top corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (£11.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean square and tight, overall a vg+ copy. 206pp. The true story of Charles Angus, a Scot from Wigtownshire, a man who aspired to be a successful Liverpool merchant. Indeed, he appeared to have everything, a young wife, three healthy children, a plantation in Jamaica and a respectable income. When his wife Maria died of consumption at the age of 21, her half sister Margaret Burns took over the care of the children in the capacity of governess. But Miss Burns was looking after far more than his domestic concerns. In those days society frowned on a man having a relationship with his deceased wife's sister. When Margaret Burns appeared to become pregnant, tongues started to wag. Then, over three days in March, Miss Burns fell violently ill with vomiting and diarrhoea. On the third day she dies under bizarre circumstances. Half an hour after suddenly feeling better and ordering lunch, she was found dead, crumpled in a corner of the room. The body lay in the house for another three days before any doctor was called. Quite scarce signed. Jacket by Christopher J. Delaney (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).…
