Buch
Zustand: Gut. 87 Seiten; farbige Illustrationen; 25,5 cm; kart. Gutes Exemplar; der farbige Einband stw. minimal berieben. - Englisch. - Corvova Choy Lee (gewidmet). - How do you become an artist, instead of what you are? Perhaps like a shaman, you have a dream, take a walk, hear things speak, which have something to teach you. The senses conflate. If you are a poet, words smell like hair, feel warm, contain darkness - as with Keats or Holderlin. If you are a visual artist, colors resound, shapes quiver or slumber, and immanence resides already in the most inchoate material. This book compels us again and again toward origins - of art making, of consciousness. The works it contains oypass metaphor to offer more direct mediation between the unknown and the individual psyche. In these works, colors are vital forces, words re-fuse with things, pictures are incarnations. Mystery of the synaesthetic instant! Excess of unities! Is it really possible to enter such a state? In our time, that is to say in Western, secular civilization, we live the tri-umph of historical consciousness. Involuntary deconstructivists, we know too well that categories such as "outsider," "Modernism," and "the beautiful" are socially constructed, not inherent in things or in any way essential. Significance is a product of economic and political circumstance. It seems there are no things themselves but only the ceaseless play of forces that allow certain objects, ideas, and categories a visibility, use, and meaning. In post-colonial parlance, just because you win doesn't mean you have truth on your side. We are prohibited from saying anything global about what it means to be human or what it means to make and experience art. Which humans? Whose art? And yet, a journey through the collection of Robert M. Greenberg puts us in touch with people whose purpose is to tell us about what it is to be human, and whose sole means for doing so - and for intervening in the world - is artistic. We shouldn't travel in ignorance just because the world may be unfamiliar or extreme. Nor can we take the aesthetic high road, as if we were Bernard Berenson in the rainforest, extolling the "tactile values" of a sacrificial altar or a decorated skull. We are obliged to understand, as far as we can, the terms of expression of each work. (Vorwort R. Greenberg) // ILLUSTRATIONEN / Arbeiten von: Henry Darger // P.M.
