"In 1999, the McLaren Art Centre?s ArtCity initiative - to see the city of Barrie as a city of art - be…gan to take place. Demonstrating strong commitment and belief in ArtCity, Barrie City Council designated the public spaces and parklands for the placement of sculpture, both temporary and permanent. Conversations and partnerships were struck as the Maclaren Art Centre moved forward with its plan to place sculpture around the city. Cultural tourism is but one motivating factor in building art city. There is another even more important aspect for creating this opportunity for art. It ensures the community who interacts with these artworks on a day-to-day basis feels comfortable and invested in experiencing art in their own backyard. This is an important indicator of the success of ArtCity and is one of the main goals behind this first year of the biennial exhibition Shore/Lines - Responding to Place - the largest and most ambitious ArtCity project to date. In our sesquicentennial year we looked to artists from both with in and outside our region to tell their story of this environment and our history, creating a meaningful experience for our community." ?
