Softcover. Zustand: VG+. Soft cover, scored and folded with color reproduction on front and reverse. 108 pp : illustrations (chiefly color). This fully illustrated, color exhibition catalogue is produced in conjunction with the exhibition, Hannah Wilke: Gestures. The catalogue features works by Wilke, never before seen, as well as works not seen in over forty years. It contains a scholarly essay by exhibition curator Tracy Fitzpatrick, the transcript of a panel discussion held at the Neuberger Museum of Art between scholars Saundra Goldman, Tom Kochheiser, and Griselda Pollock on Wilke's art and legacy, and the first published chronology of Hannah Wilke's artistic practice. The exhibition, Hannah Wilke: Gestures, held at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, The State University of New York, between October 3, 2008 and January 25, 2009, included over sixty works by the artist. It began with a focused look at Wilke's early clay sculpture. It then considered the ways in which she expanded her use of sculptural gesture into a range of unusual sculptural materials along with photography, video, and performance art, or what Wilke referred to as "living sculpture." --Book Jacket.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Hannah Wilke: Gestures (NEW! SEALED!) The catalogue features works by Wilke, never before seen, as well as works not seen in over forty years. The act of folding is the salient gesture in the sculptures of American artist Hannah Wilke (1940-1993). Taking such materials as clay, bubble gum and Play-Doh, Wilke fashioned serial forms that folded inward or opened out with overtly labial sensuousness. Wilke often placed these objects in compromising situations--hinged with pins or glued to walls and boards, placed freely on the floor, always seemingly on the verge of disaster. Today she is famed for her many nude self-portraits, which have threatened to eclipse the sculptural basis of both the portraits themselves and her work in general. By emphasizing folding as a gesture, this catalogue--the first on the artist to appear in many years--unites Wilke's sculpture and photography under the rubric of performance, and the performing of material. With an abundance of color reproductions and critical commentary, Hannah Gestures offers a fresh assessment of a pioneer in sculpture, feminist art and performance.
