In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Bigfoot exists. Not necessarily as a biological creature, but certainly as an object around which thousands of Americans organise their lives, analysing evidence, and making knowledge. This book examines the Bigfooting community sociologically. Using concepts from Science and Technology Studies (STS) as well as cultural sociology, Lewis and Bartlett shed new light on what it is to do 'science', what it is to behave 'scientifically', and where the borders of legitimate scientific practice lie.Through detailed interviews with Bigfooters themselves, this book explores the ways in which the Bigfooting community makes sense of traces and absences to make knowledge claims that are acceptable to those within that community. It also shows how Bigfooters, in the face of scepticism, attempt to render Bigfoot a proper object of scientific inquiry outside of their own circle. This fascinating, accessible, and entertaining reading will appeal to scholars and students of science and technology studies, cultural sociology, and the sociology of mystery, as well as to those interested in the public trust in and understanding of science.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Print on Demand from publisher. Pictorial wraps. 272pp. Drawings. Bibliography. Index. This book is written by two sociologists who agree with mainstream science that there is no such thing as a Bigfoot. However, there are multitudes of "Bigfooters," people who think there are and do research, or are at least very interested. This book is, therefore, the authors' study of, not Bigfoot or Sasquatch, but Bigfoot hunters and gatherers. However, even though the authors don't have the foggiest idea of in-the-field research and have never seen even a footprint (living and being professors in England is a sort of puts them at a disadvantage), their book is actually extremely well-researched and carefully written as they describe and sociologically analyze the methods and mindsets and constructs of serious sasquatch researchers. They interviewed 166 individuals to write this book and they take a considerably detailed and serious "lookback" of the old famous researchers like Dahinden, Green, Krantz, and Byrne. If you believe sasquatch exists, you may not want to read a book that is tinctured with skepticism, but this is one that you really have to read. It, pardon the pun, should leave a big footprint on modern sasquatch research. It's a scholarly book that one can actually read without a college degree, but you will learn some new terms if you are not a sociologist. Like new. Fine condition. An expensive book as its issued from a high-profile publisher.
