It is a story of a great king, Ptolemy IV (Philopator) and his unprovoked attack on the Jewish people of Egypt. The author, writing for a Jewish audience, uses the story to argue that even when faced with overwhelming odds, the faithful need not despair for the intervention of God is always possible. The book provides a glimpse into the lives of the Jewish community in Ptolemaic Egypt and the tensions that existed between them and the ruling elite. It also illuminates the development of Jewish thought, particularly in relation to the role of God in human affairs and the importance of trust in Him.
