The play is not about Bartholomew Fair per se but about the people who attend itâ"from the cheating seller of gingerbread, to the fraudulent fortune teller, to the sanctimonious Justice of the Peace in disguise. The humor derives from the colorful characters and their interactions as they navigate romance, petty crime, and the chaos of the fair. In many ways, the city crowd and the marketplace in Bartholomew Fair prefigures the bustling London of the 19th-century novel. Through its plot and characters, this book provides a lens into the cultural values and social hierarchies of early 17th-century England. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
