Michigan's first Baptist church was established in 1822. Then a sparsely populated region, Michigan faced many challenges in its early years, including an influx of settlers, poor roads, difficult travel and frequent Indian uprisings. Despite these obstacles, the Baptist community grew and thrived in the state. This book includes historical reminiscences from Baptist pioneers, descriptions of each church established, and chronicles the work of early missionaries to Native American populations. The author describes the founding and significance of major institutions including Kalamazoo College, the American Baptist Home Mission Society, and the Women's Baptist Home Mission Society. Also included is an account of the participation of Michigan Baptists in the founding of the American Baptist Publication Society. The book concludes with statistical information and charts illustrating the progress of the Baptist denomination in Michigan through 1906.
