Previous… studies of the effects of the Teamsters Union on the trucking industry have focused on wage trends or union/nonunion wage differentials. The findings of these studies are difficult to interpret and do not reveal the split of rents between the union and trucking companies. The author estimates the impact of unionization directly from trucking companies' profits. The book concludes that the union has been a powerful force in the trucking industry, with estimates of the union's share of profits averaging about seventy percent of total rents. The author argues that this has resulted in rents per worker of fifty to sixty thousand dollars in present discounted value, or five to six thousand dollars annually. This book provides new insights into the division of rents between labor and capital in regulated industries and the broader implications for economic efficiency and industry performance.
