This collection of writings found after his death, offers a profound insight into the mind of a revolutionary figure in French history: Thà ophile-Armand Rossel. Forced into a position to defend the indefensible, we witness his disillusionment with the French military. This book carefully pieces together the writings and correspondence of Rossel to present the struggle he faced with his duty as a soldier versus the truths he witnessed. The author brilliantly places Rossel within the chaos of the Franco -Prussian war, highlighting his fervent patriotism and his struggle to reconcile his duty to his country and his own moral code. Rossel's humanity and intelligence shines throughout as he writes with clarity and honesty about military ineptitude and political opportunism. His analysis of the defense of Metz and the war as a whole not only provides a unique perspective on the conflict but also an understanding of the man himself. Framed by an insightful introduction, this book provides a fresh look at the life and work of Rossel and an important primary source for the Franco -Prussian war. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
