This book explores the emergence of the concept of liberty of conscience and the defense of religious beliefs in England, looking particularly at the writings of the founders of the Baptist denomination. The author has sourced extracts from original historical documents, enabling readers to explore the arguments for religious tolerance presented by these early Baptists. These writers argued their case against the backdrop of religious persecution during the reigns of Henry VIII and Mary. Their writings offer valuable insights into the struggles for religious freedom, and the development of ideas of conscience and tolerance. These ideas were to shape the development of the Baptist movement and have a lasting legacy on the establishment of religious liberty that would ultimately extend throughout Great Britain and her empire.
