Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the 1842 treaty between Britain and the United States which aimed to abolish the slave trade on the African coast. Despite the treaty, this book reveals that between 1840 and 1860 the slave trade continued, and even flourished, and provides primary evidence and firsthand eyewitness accounts to illustrate the reasons for this failure. It argues that the most important reason for this failure was the greed of American shipbuilders, merchants, and traders who continued to profit from the slave trade, even though they had sworn off the trade on paper. The author also points to the continued demand for slaves, especially in Cuba, as another factor in the slave trade's persistence, and argues that Britain was, at best, a halfhearted partner in efforts to suppress slave trading. The book concludes that "the suppression of the slave trade was one of the great moral achievements of the nineteenth century, and it remains a matter of pride to both Britain and the United States that they played a leading role in bringing it about. But let us beware of complacency and self-righteousness. The evil of slavery has not been eradicated, and the lessons of history are still relevant today."
